UNC basketball fans are no doubt pinching themselves as the Tar Heels have made it into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament under new head coach Hubert Davis.

Quite honestly, there were times that this season looked like it was going nowhere. Coach Davis, we are proud of you and the team and wish you the best of luck!

Here’s a few quick facts about Hubert Davis you may not have known!

• 1. Born and Raised

  Hubert Davis was born in the North Carolina tobacco capital city of Winston Salem

• 2. A UNC Alum

  Coach Davis played 4 years for the legendary Dean Smith from 1988-1992

• 3. Bench Experience

• 4. Familiar Surroundings

  Many don’t know that Hubert was head coach of the UNC junior varsity program as well.

  Hubert was an analyst for ESPN for 7 years and was co-host of the College GameDay program.

• 6. A Prolific Scorer

  As a UNC Senior, Davis scored in double figures in 32 of 33 games.

• 7. Career High Points

  In 1992, Hubert scored a career-high 35 points while playing the Duke Blue Devils.

• 8. Justice Served

  Davis is proud of his degree in criminal justice he received in 1992.

• 9. NBA Bonafides

  Also in 1992, Davis was chosen to play pro basketball with the NBA’s New York Knicks.

  Hubert and his wife Leslie have three children, Elijah, Gracie and Micah

• 11. Family Tradition

  If you’re wondering, yes that was Hubert’s uncle Walter Davis who was a UNC star from 1973-77 who went on to be a six-time NBA All-Star.

  Break-a-leg UNC heading into the NCAA Sweet 16 playing the UCLA Bruins Friday at 9:39pm.
