Soccer Player Killed By Lightning In Middle Of Game
The chances of being struck by lightning are actually quite low, but it’s still important to take precautions to stay safe during thunderstorms. On average, the odds of being struck by lightning in the United States in any given year are about 1 in 500,000. However, this can vary depending on where you live and your outdoor activities.
Factors that can increase the risk of being struck by lightning include being in open areas like fields or golf courses, being near tall objects like trees or poles, and engaging in outdoor activities such as swimming or hiking during a thunderstorm.
A man in Indonesia was struck down by a bolt of lightning in the middle of a soccer match. According to the Independent, Septain Raharja, 35, was in the middle of a game between his Football Boots Indonesia squad and FC Bandung on Saturday when he was hit by the lightning and collapsed on the field. Raharja was still breathing when his teammates rushed him off the field, though he later died at the hospital.
As terrifying as this is, it’s not the only time this has happened. Last year, another player from Indonesia was knocked unconscious after being struck by lightning. It also happened in 2004 when soccer player Jiang Tao, 18, was killed by lightning while training at a stadium in Singapore.
What you can do to stay safe?
To stay safe, it’s recommended to seek shelter in a sturdy building or vehicle during a thunderstorm, avoid using electronic devices connected to an outlet, and stay away from water and metal objects.
While the chances of being struck by lightning may be low, it’s always better to be cautious and prepared when thunderstorms are in the forecast. By following safety guidelines and being aware of your surroundings, you can reduce the risk of being struck by lightning and stay safe during severe weather conditions.
