Incoming Fayetteville State Freshman Wins $1 million in Vaccine Lottery
The state of North Carolina set up a lottery system to help motivate residents to get the COVID-19 vaccine, and for incoming Fayetteville State University freshman Audrey Chavous, that vaccine won her $1 million.
Chavous, who is from Winston-Salem, was the third winner since the program was announced by Gov. Roy Cooper earlier this summer.
“Facts about COVID-19 vaccines are key,” said Chavous, the cash drawing winner. “If you take your time and do the research, you’ll see that it’s backed by science and that the benefits of COVID-19 vaccines far outweigh any short-term side effects or rare risks.”

Cooper announced the winner during his latest news briefing on the impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state.
“But today, we do have some good news. I’m happy to announce the third winner of the Your Shot at a Million drawing,” Cooper said. “18-year-old Audrey Chavous is from Winston-Salem, and her name was randomly drawn from the list of those vaccinated to be our latest North Carolina winner!
“The highly contagious Delta variant makes vaccination all the more important. We can’t afford for people to wait any longer. Cases, hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 are up. Simply put, get your shot.”

Cooper also reminded residents of the state’s new $100 Summer Card program, offering $100 to anybody who gets their first COVID-19 vaccine shot in the month of August.
“New cases of COVID-19 are on the rise and most of these cases are among young adults,” Kody Kinsley, Chief Deputy Secretary for Health at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said. “Vaccination is our way out of this pandemic and putting masks behind us. Our $1 Million Summer Cash drawings might be over, but you can still get a $100 Summer Card through the end of August. Don’t wait to vaccinate.”
