This afternoon image from the National Weather Service shows an increase in snow coverage for most of the area.

Yes, you heard us correctly this time: Snow will be coming to the Fayetteville area tonight. It’s basically a done deal, locked in, ready to go.

(UPDATE: 4 p.m. – The National Weather Service has increased the forecast for snow in the area, with Fayetteville now projected to receive 3-4 inches of snow. See the latest information below.)

Unless…

There’s always a catch when it comes to snow in Fayetteville, and we’ve told you all week about some of the problems that come along with predicting snow here. But the National Weather Service – and many other meteorologists – seem to be pretty locked in on this one now. After a lot of rain last night (that we hoped would turn into something a little more frozen, but it didn’t cooperate), the conditions are perfect for today’s storm to be different.

You’re going to have to be patient though. Mostly, it’s going to be dry all morning and afternoon. That’ll lead to an endless number of Facebook posts proclaiming “See, I told you it wasn’t going to snow!” But you can hold back your posts until tonight, because the National Weather Service says this:

“The winter storm will impact the area late this afternoon & tonight. Expect little to no precipitation this morning into the early afternoon. If you are looking for accumulating snow, you will have to wait late this afternoon and especially tonight.”

And this all sounds pretty confident, which is great, but Fayetteville and Cumberland County are currently coasting along a boundary line that could shift throughout the day. And we’ll update this story accordingly if it does. For now though, snow should be falling in Fayetteville tonight. Probably around 2-3 inches of the stuff. And it could have some sleet on either side of the storm too.

Here’s how things are shaping up:
