As Hurricane Helene begins to impact Fayetteville and the rest of Southeastern North Carolina, several closures and delays have been announced.
On top of the storm, an unrelated water main break in Fayetteville has led to a nearly city-wide boil advisory for Fayetteville PWC customers. That’s causing some additional closures as well.
Hurricane Helene Impacts
Hurricane Helene is approaching the Big Bend area of the Florida Gulf Coast, and is expected to have dramatic impacts on that region. As of 5 p.m., the storm was moving quickly through the Gulf but had maximum sustained winds of 125 mph.
That makes the storm a Category 3 hurricane and it is expected to strengthen more before landfall tonight. The size of the storm is where the Fayetteville area is going to experience impacts.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend out over 300 miles from the storm’s center, and once it impacts land as a likely Category 4 storm, nearly all of the Southeast will see impacts.
While the storm is expected to take a Northwest turn toward the Tennessee Valley, rain and wind bands will move through our region overnight and into Friday.
