‘The Lion King’ Just Beat ‘Frozen’ To Become The Highest-Grossing Animated Movie Ever
The Lion King is not only the king of the jungle, now its the king of animated movies. In fact, The Lion King is now the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, dethroning Frozen.
The photorealistic animated reboot of The Lion King, which yes, is still considered “animated,” broke the record with a current worldwide gross of over $1.33 billion, according to CinemaBlend. The film has made $118 million in China alone.
Frozen made a worldwide gross of $1.27 billion back in 2013. Rounding out the top five highest-grossing animated films is Incredibles 2, Minions and Toy Story 3.
The Lion King has yet to break the record for the highest domestic grossing animated film. Last year’s Incredibles 2 currently holds that record with $607.5 million. The Lion King has currently made $473.1 million in the United States and Canada.
The Lion King might also want to watch its back since Frozen 2 will finally hit theaters on November 22. Let’s assume Elsa, Anna, and Olaf aren’t going to let this record go so easily.
