Top Moments From The 2024 Emmy Awards: Highlights & Surprises

The 2024 Emmy Awards were held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The 76th annual event celebrating the best in television was hosted by the father-son team Eugene and Dan Levy. If you recall that the Emmys happened earlier this year, you’re right: The 2023 ceremony was postponed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike and occurred in January. Now, the awards have returned to their usual September schedule.

Emmy Awards Highlights

Shōgun led the nominations with 25, followed by The Bear with 23 and Only Murders in the Building with 21. Shōgun dominated the drama categories, securing the four major awards of the night, while Hacks took home best comedy, beating The Bear. Baby Reindeer won four awards in the limited series or TV movie category. Despite previously announcing his retirement, Jon Stewart won Best Talk Series after returning to The Daily Show.

In a night full of humor and puns, Selena Gomez presented the first award of the evening alongside her Only Murders in the Building co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin. As Short and Martin joked about each other’s age, Gomez joined in with a witty remark. “Steve, let me say what an honor it is to be working with someone who looks like he’s fallen and can’t get up,” Short joked, leading Martin to respond, “And let me say what an honor it is for me to be working with someone who looks like a former women’s tennis champion.” Gomez added, “And let me say, what an honor it is to work with two men who are this far away from being childless cat ladies.”

Eugene and Dan Levy, acknowledging their lack of stand-up experience, still managed to entertain during their opening monologue. As the first father-son duo to host TV’s biggest night, they humorously poked fun at the FX on Hulu series, a Disney-owned show that was an easy target given the Emmys’ broadcast on Disney’s ABC network. “The Bear is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight, making it the most-nominated comedy in history,” Eugene Levy remarked. “Now, I love the show, and I know some of you will be expecting us to make a joke about whether The Bear is really a comedy—but in the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.”
