New North Carolina Program Plans To Feed A Million School Children This Summer
Providing the children of North Carolina with reliable food sources over the summer is crucial. That’s why the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) is introducing SUN Bucks, a new food program for NC families to take advantage of for the summer of 2024 and beyond.
SUN Bucks are part of the new Summer EBT program, which provides low-income families with grocery benefits to help feed their children when they’re on summer vacation. NCDHHS is teaming up with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI) to provide SUN Bucks benefits to almost a million students statewide.

According to a news release, families who qualify for the program will receive a one-time payment of $120 per eligible child over the summer. This will allow families to buy groceries at any store in North Carolina that accepts EBT.
In a statement to NCDHHS, NC Health and Human Services Secretary Kody H. Kinsley detailed the intention behind the new SUN Bucks program. “Food is foundational to health,” Kinsley said. “The SUN Bucks program will help relieve kids’ hunger, support their health and promote the ability for them to learn.”
Most children will automatically qualify for SUN Bucks, but some families will have to apply. Children will automatically qualify if they are eligible for:
- Free and reduced-price meals at schools
- Food and Nutrition Services
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
- NC Medicaid benefits and have a household income below 185% of the federal poverty level
In addition to the new program, NC families are also encouraged to explore other summer nutrition programs, listed here.
