Sports Betting in North Carolina Still Delayed, As Lottery Vets Operators
This is a special guest story on North Carolina sports betting from Beasley Fayetteville Market Manager Ronnie Glover!
Way back in the middle of 2023, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper signed House Bill 347, which legalized sports betting in the state. The hope was that it would be live and ready to go by the beginning of the 2024, but thanks a whole lot of red tape, that’s definitely not going to happen.
Technically, sports wagering is now legal in the state. And you can do it now on tribal lands with casinos, according to the state.
“Currently, sports betting is only allowed at the casinos located on tribal lands of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and the Catawba Indian Nation. Otherwise, you cannot place a legal sports bet or wager on a horse race in North Carolina until such time as sports betting and advanced deposit wagering licenses have been granted and the operators with those licenses are authorized by the Commission to begin accepting wagers. In the future, the Commission will identify a first day for authorized, lawful betting.”
But for the rest of the state, and for online the start date has been shifted multiple times, from January to February and now probably sometime in March. This means that residents of North Carolina who were eagerly anticipating placing bets on events like the College Football National Championship, NFL Playoffs, and the Super Bowl, will now have to wait until March. It’s a bit of a bummer, but at least we know it’s coming! Step up and place your bets on the March launch over/under.
It’s not that things are being purposefully delayed, there’s just a lot that goes into this. Per state rules, FanDuel, DraftKings, and Fanatics, along with 11 other operators, have filed applications, and several hundred applications are expected by March to be official providers. The workflow and time it takes to conduct background checks on these applications will be the most influential factors when determining a specific launch date.
A start date will be decided once the Tar Heel State has determined how many applications must be processed. The final application deadline is set for Wednesday, December 27.
If I were a betting man, wait, what? I would take the points on North Carolina being ready to launch in March, then parlay that with the NCAA Championship game on Monday, April 8, for a Duke vs. North Carolina matchup! If you believe that, you will probably take the over on the Carolina Panthers, winning 3 games this year! Ouch!
I hope we can confirm this March date for North Carolina sports betting, before Lucy yanks the football away, leaving us looking like a bunch of Charlie Browns. AAUGGGGGGHHHHH!!!
