Daniel Kaluuya’s Oscar Speech Was Unforgettable, Especially For His Mom
Daniel Kaluuya’s acceptance speech for winning the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Judas and the Black Messiah was amazing and social media loved it.
Firstly he thanked God, then his mother for “pouring so much into me.” When the camera panned over to them in the audience, his sister was in tears, while his mother was on the verge of crying as well. He thanked his mother and sister, who were seated in the crowd. To his mother, Kaluuya said, “You gave me everything. You gave me your factory settings. So I can stand to my fullest height.”
After thanking his team and those involved with the film, he shared the honor with fellow nominee and castmate, LaKeith Stanfield. He shouted out Chairmen of the Black Panthers Fred Hampton, “What a man. How blessed we are that we lived in a lifetime where he existed, do you understand? Thank you for your life.”
He went on to say that Hampton “was on this earth for 21 years. 21 years and he found a way to feed kids breakfast. Educate kids, get free medical care — against all odds. He showed me, he taught me – him, Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale, the Black Panther Party, they showed me how to love myself. And with that love they overflowed it to the Black community and to other communities. And they showed us that the power of union — the power of unity — that when they play divide and conquer, we stay unite and ascend.”
He ended his speech on a lighter note that he will get back to work — but on Tuesday because “tonight I’m going up!” The celebration of life, “we’re breathing, we’re walking. It’s incredible. It’s INCREDIBLE. My mum met my dad, they had sex. It’s amazing!” After Kaluuya said that, queue the look on his sister’s face in embarrassment. It took a moment for his mom to follow what he meant by that, but when she did, she mouthed “what’s he going on about?”
“Peace, love, and onwards” was the last thing Kaluuya said on the stand, but Twitter went onwards immediately after they just saw what went down.
