How To Watch The Oscar Nominees For Best Picture
Want to watch the Best Picture nominations for this year’s Oscars? Look no further, as we have compiled a list for your convenience. Unfortunately, you can’t see all of them from the comfort of your home.
The Father
Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman star in this drama where Hopkins portrays a man who struggles with leaning on his daughter, played by Colman, as he begins to develop dementia. Hopkins is nominated for Best Actor, and Coleman for Best Supporting Actress for their roles in the film. The film is also up for Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay), Film Editing, and Production Design
The film is actually in select theaters (remember those?). It will be available for online purchase (but not streaming) on Friday, March 26 at Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Vudu, and Google Play.
Judas and the Black Messiah
William O’Neal, played by LaKeith Stanfield, is offered a plea deal by FBI agent (Jesse Plemons) to infiltrate the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party to gather intelligence on Chairman Fred Hampton, played by Daniel Kaluuya. Both Stanfield and Kaluuya are up for Best Supporting Actor.
Other nominations for Judas and the Black Messiah are: for Best Writing (Original Screenplay), Best Cinematography, Best Music (Original Song) for H.E.R.’s “Fight For You.”
At the moment, Judas and the Black Messiah is available only to view in theaters. The film premiered on February 12th both in cinemas and streaming on HBO Max. As part of the deal, the film streamed on HBO for 31 days after its release. Judas and the Black Messiah left HBO Max on March 14th, the day right before the Oscar nominations were announced.
Mank
Mank is a biographical drama film about screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, played by Gary Oldman (who is nominated for Best Actor in a Lead Role), and his race to finish the screenplay for 1941’s Citizen Kane. You are taken along the ride of flashbacks through the eyes of scathing social critic and alcoholic Mankiewicz in 1930’s Hollywood.
Other nominations for Mank are: Amanda Seyfried for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Costume Design, Best Music (Original Score), Best Sound, Best Cinematography, Best Directing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Production Design.

Minari
Minari follows a Korean-American family led by Jacob (played by Steven Yeun of Walking Dead fame; he’s nominated for Best Actor In A Leading role), who move to an Arkansas farm in the ’80s in search of their own American Dream. The family home changes completely with the arrival of their sly, foul-mouthed, but incredibly loving grandmother (played by Yuh-Jung Youn, who is nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role). Amidst the instability and challenges of this new life in the rugged Ozarks, Minari shows the undeniable resilience of family and what really makes a home.

Nomadland
Nomadland follows the story of Fern, played by Frances McDormand (nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role), who is faced with the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, who then packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. From director Chloé Zhao, Nomadland features real nomads Linda May, Swankie, and Bob Wells as Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West.

Promising Young Woman
Promising Young Woman is available to rent for $5.99 on YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, and Vudu. It is also playing at select theatres.
A young woman named Cassie, played by Carey Mulligan (nominated for Actress In A Lead Role), is traumatized by a tragic event in her past, seeks out vengeance against those who crossed her path — by pretending she’s too drunk to stand, getting “help” from “nice guys.” Enter old classmate, Ryan, played by Bo Burnham, who makes Cassie want out of this life she’s been living.

Sound of Metal
Heavy-metal drummer Ruben, played by Riz Ahmed (who is nominated for Actor In A Leading Role) experiences intermittent hearing loss. When a doctor tells him his condition will worsen, he thinks his life and career are over. His bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) checks the recovering heroin addict into a secluded sober house for the deaf in hopes it will prevent a relapse and help him adapt to his new situation.

The Trial of the Chicago 7
Based on the infamous 1969 trial of seven defendants charged by the federal government with conspiracy, from the protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The trial captivated the nation and sparked a conversation about mayhem intended to undermine the U.S. government.
