Do The GRAMMYs Lack Female Representation?
With everything being pushed behind the Women Empowerment train, you’d think the GRAMMYs would know better.
Last night, the star-studded award ceremony had TONS of performances, but apparently being nominated for ‘Album Of The Year’ does not automatically gain you a seat for that.
Lorde happened to be the only female nominated for the category, and it’s been unveiled now that all the male nominees in the category were offered solo performance spots… But Lorde was not.
Though we had Lady Gaga, Kesha, SZA and P!NK perform, as well as Cardi B accompanying Bruno Mars, and Rihanna with DJ Khaled, E! notes that Lorde’s mother tweeted out some statistics that were quite staggering.

Jay-Z turned down the opportunity to perform, while Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars, and Childish Gambino all hit the stage. This is the same Childish Gambino that got such poor reviews for the album he was nominated for – ‘Awaken, My Love!’ – No hate to Donald Glover. I love the man, personally.
They apparently offered to Lorde to perform in a tribute to Tom Petty, according to Variety, but they wanted to have her involved in the song “American Girl,” which Lorde is NOT (She’s from New Zealand).
According to Billboard, Recording Academy President Neil Portnow and Grammys executive producer Ken Elrich stand by their decision to not let her perform.
Elrich said,“These shows are always a matter of choices, and we know we have a box and the box gets full and filled up… She had a great album, album of the year is a big honor, but there’s no way we can really deal with everybody. Sometimes people get left out that shouldn’t, but on the other hand, we did the best we can to make sure that it’s a representative and balanced show.”
If there is an argument we can make at this point, it’s that the GRAMMY executives probably wouldn’t let her perform because of her middle school talent show-esque performance from MTV’s VMA Awards:

Either way, 9%? Really GRAMMYs? We’re not calling for you to undercut the guys in the name of female inclusion, but at least try and look at some more female albums and have an open mind. SHEESH.
