Google Maps Now Has A COVID-19 Layer Tracker To Expose Hot Spots
Google Maps is doing a lot more than just helping users avoid traffic jams. According to the company blog, the app will now help you avoid COVID-19.
They state that the COVID-19 layer is “a tool that shows critical information about COVID-19 cases in an area so you can make more informed decisions about where to go and what to do.”
Google explains how it works, saying, “When you open Google Maps, tap on the layers button on the top right hand corner of your screen and click on ‘COVID-19 info.’ You’ll then see a seven-day average of new COVID cases per 100,000 people for the area of the map you’re looking at, and a label that indicates whether the cases are trending up or down.”
There will also be color-coding to distinguish the density of new cases in specific areas.
Data used in the COVID-19 layer comes from multiple sources, including Johns Hopkins, the New York Times, Wikipedia, World Health Organization, government health ministries, and state and local health agencies and hospitals.
This feature will be available in all 220 countries and territories where Google Maps is available. It is set to roll out this week for both Android and iOS users.
