How Anna Kendrick Found the Courage to Talk About Her Past Abuse
Anna Kendrick is known to be a bubbly actress and comparable to the Trolls character she voiced, Poppy. However, recent news has brought to light that she’s been facing a battle no one knows.
Recognizing the Abuse
Kendrick did not mention who of her exes she was referring to and admitted she didn’t even identify as someone who was in an abusive relationship. In an episode of Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, Kendrick she said that she had read articles about people in abusive relationships and noticed some similarities to her situation. She said, “It was like an overnight switch… that went on for about a year. So, it didn’t follow that more traditional [path]. It’s like a frog in boiling water thing where it started slow.”
Like other women who experienced abuse, Anna Kendrick thought the problem was her. “It came out of absolutely nowhere but was built on this foundation of, I had so much love and trust for that person, so I thought it had to be me. Like, if one of us is crazy, it must be me. So, it was very, very difficult to actually go, ‘No, I think this is him. I think this is his stuff.’ I turned my life completely upside down trying to fix whatever was wrong with me.”
Owning Her Story
Fortunately, Kendrick managed to get out of the relationship after recognizing the abuse. Her 2022 movie, Alice, Darling, about emotional abuse, hit so close to home that she didn’t tell anyone she was doing it because she didn’t want anyone trying to dissuade her from taking on the role. In her 2022 interview with People, Kendrick described making the movie and that she “felt incredibly cathartic” after.
Moving Forward
Kendrick made her directorial debut with Woman of the Hour. The movie is about the true story of a young woman who is paired with a serial killer on a dating show. It debuted at #1 on Netflix, as reported by Forbes. She admitted, “It does feel like the most revealing piece of work I’ve ever done.”
After her relationship ended, she also realized she wanted to step back from doing comedy, per BuzzFeed News. Kendrick also made headlines lately because she has discussed not wanting to have children. She told The Flow Space that when she hears men referencing “helping out with the kids,” it irks her. “When I hear husbands say they want to ‘help out’ with the kids. And it’s two working parents! And I always want to kind of say something, and then I’m just like, ‘Well, I’m the childless cat lady. I’m not gonna say s—.’”
