5 Exciting Fall Foliage Train Trips Across the Southeast
Fall is my absolute favorite time of year, and there’s no better way to soak in the stunning autumn colors than a scenic train ride through the Southeast for fall foliage! Here are some of the best options for leaf peepers like me:
The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in Blue Ridge, Georgia is a must-do. Their 26-mile roundtrip Fall Rides journey along the picturesque Toccoa River, winding through the vibrant countryside ablaze with rich fall hues. You can opt for the quicker 2-hour Express trip or the 4-hour Extended Tour with a layover in the charming twin towns of McCaysville and Copperhill. With comfy coaches featuring large windows perfect for taking in the views, it’s a delightful way to spend a crisp autumn day.
Tennessee Valley Railroad in Chattanooga also offers several enticing fall excursions. The 65-minute Missionary Ridge Local crosses four scenic bridges and a pre-Civil War tunnel and includes a neat turntable demonstration. For a longer adventure, the Hiwassee Loop and Copperhill Special routes look incredible. Check out their live webcam here
Of course, the Great Smoky Mountains are spectacular in fall! The Nantahala Gorge Excursion in Bryson City, North Carolina rolls through the colorful, steep-walled gorge along the foaming river. What a breathtaking way to experience the season!
Down in Georgia, the SAM Shortline departs from Cordele and rambles through pecan groves, cotton fields, and small towns all decked out in their autumn finest.
And don’t miss the Okefenokee Swamp Park Railroad for a one-of-a-kind fall experience riding the “Lady Suwannee” through the hauntingly beautiful swampland.
