Fayetteville Native, Jack Britt Grad Sullivan Wins Bronze Medal at Paris Olympics
Sammy Sullivan, a Jack Britt High School graduate and Fayetteville native is coming home from the Paris Olympics with a medal.
Sullivan, a Captain in the U.S. Army, was part of the women’s rugby sevens team that captured the Bronze Medal in stunning fashion Tuesday.
The United States was facing Australia in the Bronze Medal match, and trailed in the final seconds of play, after Australia scored late.
But Alex Sedrick took off with the ball and ran the length of the field as time expired to tie the game, and the two points scored on the conversion was enough to give the Americans a 14-12 win, and their first-ever rugby medal in the Olympics. New Zealand beat Canada 19-12 in the Gold Medal match.
Sullivan was a late-comer to the rugby world, picking up the sport at West Point, when she was turned away from the soccer program. Her father had played the sport, and West Point has one of the best programs in the country.
