Lady Gaga In The ‘Joker’ Trailer: ‘Let’s Give The People What They Want’
The trailer for the highly anticipated new Joker film, co-starring Lady Gaga, is here. It is, of course, the sequel to 2019’s The Joker, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. Lady Gaga plays Harley Quinn, another Batman villain. The first movie had references to the Batman mythos, taking place in Gotham City, and there was even a cameo by a young Bruce Wayne, but Batman didn’t appear in the film.
This movie appears to follow a similar path. The film doesn’t exist in the same universe as the 2022 film The Batman. The trailer establishes that the story takes place two years after the events of The Joker. Arthur Fleck – aka the Joker – appears to still have the neurological disorder that makes him laugh randomly. We also see that his fanbase has only gotten stronger in the past two years.
We then hear Harley Quinn’s voice: “When I first saw Joker – when I first saw you – for once in my life, I didn’t feel so alone anymore.” She appears to be homeless and mentally ill. We see her smash a window of an electronics store and steal a TV. We also see Joker and Harley kiss, which makes sense: in pretty much every Harley story (including the hilarious and extremely NSFW Harley Quinn animated series on Max), the two have some kind of romantic entanglement.
And we then see Fleck singing Stevie Wonder’s “For Once In My Life”: “For once in my life, I have someone who needs me.” We then see scenes on TV of “The Trial of Arthur Fleck” – but Fleck is wearing his Joker makeup. “Look around!” he bellows. “Look at all these people! I will no longer allow any of you to keep me down!”
As he says this, we see chaotic scenes involving Joker or Harley or both. We also see that they are hosting some sort of TV show together, which looks similar to the talk show Joker appeared on in the first film. Joker says “I have the sneaking suspicion that we’re not giving the people what they want!”
“It’s OK, baby,” Harley replies. “Let’s give the people what they want.” We also see a scene of the two of them on an outdoor staircase, mimicking the iconic staircase scene from the first film.
Joker: Folie A Deux opens in theaters on October 4. Watch the trailer below.
