‘Agatha All Along’: Creepy New MCU Series Investigates Wanda’s Death
Marvel’s next streaming TV show harkens back to the first MCU show to premiere on Disney+, Wandavision. Agatha All Along features Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness, a centuries-old witch who lived next door to Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olson) and the Vision (Paul Bettany).
In “WandaVision,” Hahn is first introduced as Agnes, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision’s (Paul Bettany) annoying neighbor in suburban Westview, New Jersey. But after an epic battle, Wanda traps Agatha in her Anges persona. And that’s who we see at the beginning of the newly released trailer. Apparently, Anges is now a police detective, and she’s examining Wanda’s dead body (she may or may not have died at the end of 2022’s Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness). And clearly, this will lead to Anges remembering that she’s Agatha.
The cast includes a number of interesting choices, playing various witches and sorceresses: Aubrey Plaza from Parks and Recreation (not to be confused with her doppelganger Jenna Ortega who plays the title role on Netflix’s Wednesday), Patti LuPone (who also played a witch on the classic show Penny Dreadful), and former Saturday Night Live cast member Sasheer Zamata.
At the beginning of the trailer, Anges is called to investigate a “Jane Doe” murder. Looking at the body, she whispers, “What happened to you?” Investigating the body further in the morgue, Plaza’s character appears and asks her, “Is this really how you see yourself?”
“That witch is gone,” she continues. “Leaving you trapped in her distorted spell. Claw your way out!” We then see different versions of Agatha from Wandavision — each episode of the series took place in a different decade (it’s hard to explain, but it’s a great binge-watch).
It seems that the presence of Wanda is inferred in the trailer, but there’s no evidence to make us believe that Elizabeth Olson herself will appear in the series, although there are rumors that she’ll return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future.
The show has gone through a few different title changes: per Variety, it has had the working title “Agatha: House of Harkness,” “Coven of Chaos,” “Darkhold Diaries,” and “The Lying Witch With Great Wardrobe,” but the publication postulates that the name changes were all a ruse: “It was clear Agatha was up to her witchy antics and fiddling with the title.”
