According to the North Carolina Travel Industry Association, North Carolina is "one of the most visited vacation and leisure destinations in the United States, with 300 miles of beautiful beaches, scenic mountains and vibrant cities." They also state that all of the tourism and travel from outside the state helps local businesses and governments. In fact, visitors to North Carolina spent more than $28.9 billion in the state in 2021. Governor Luther Hodges founded the North Carolina Travel Industry Association in 1955 with the goal to "consolidate resources and promote our great State," so they keep up with the latest travel numbers. Moreover, according to the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, "North Carolina is the fifth most visited state for domestic visitation in the U.S., making it an ideal location for tourism and hospitality businesses. All 100 counties in the state are committed to the success of this industry that employs 7.5% of North Carolinians."

Before we get to the No. 1 most beautiful North Carolina spot, let's look at No. 2. The tally comes from travel experts at Visit North Carolina. They say the No. 2 loveliest North Carolina spot is Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Of the area, Visit North Carolina boasts, "The barrier islands that separate the Pamlico Sound and Atlantic Ocean are a state and national treasure. Cape Hatteras National Seashore stretches from Bodie Island on the north end southward to Ocracoke Island." It's definitely a prized visitor attraction. Now, onto No. 1. They crown the Great Smoky Mountains National Park the most beautiful spot in all of the state. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is actually the most-visited national park in the U.S., according to Visit North Carolina. There's a lot to do there, too, from just taking in the wonderous views to hiking to biking. "For hikers, a short journey through the Deep Creek area along the southern border brings you to three waterfalls: Juney Whank, Indian Creek and Tom Branch," they state. "Home to world-famous theme parks that attract millions of visitors a year, like Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld, it comes as no surprise that Orlando is the number one top travel destination in the U.S.," they state.
