Why Virtual Dates Are Becoming More Popular Than In-Person Dates
First dates are starting to look a bit different for some, especially now that virtual dates are a thing. Business Insider reported on a poll from the dating app Wingman that revealed some new dating trends. The dating app surveyed 500 users and found a shift in the dating scene since the height of the pandemic. “Virtual dating — a pandemic-era trend — is back in vogue because going out has gotten so expensive,” said Business Insider. They added that Gen Z has embraced the virtual first date, which lets them “test the water” with new people while dealing with the “increasing cost of living.”
The survey revealed that 65% of users aged 18 to 27 choose to video call as a first date instead of meeting up. Some of the reasons people opt for virtual dates are that they’re less expensive, and they don’t have to worry about buying food and drinks or riding shares to and from dates.
Someone pointed out to the outlet that a lot of people in Gen Z might see multiple people at the same time especially if they are on Tinder, Hinge, or Bumble. “So that’s why they might prefer Zoom dates because you could go on multiple dates in a day without leaving your house,” they continued.

On Reddit, some people shared their virtual date experiences, with some working out and others falling short. One person said that they screen-shared a short film and cried, and then their date didn’t want to speak to them because it was awkward.
Some people may think that virtual dates involve awkward pauses and technical glitches. But some people say they can have fun with creative ideas and save you money and time. They can also give people a sense of safety and control, like quickly ending a date if it’s unpleasant.
Another person said, “First one was great, we had wine and pizza and the chat flowed really well. Ended up dating a couple of months due to my inability to accept some gross habits of his.” But they did mention doing it again if they had the opportunity. “Met my bf on Omegle. We didn’t know that it would end up being a first date, but I guess it went well because now we’re engaged,” someone said.
Tips for virtual dates.
Rest Less, a lifestyle and travel website shared some tips on how to have a successful first virtual date. They said one of the best ways to ease first-date nerves and allow yourself to get excited about your virtual dating experience is to set up your camera in advance. This also includes agreeing to a video calling platform beforehand. There are several to choose from like Zoom, Skype, or Google Hangouts.
They also mentioned dressing to impress and for self-confidence. “Just because you aren’t going out on a date, there’s no reason why you can’t dress as if you were,” they said.
To avoid any awkward moments, be sure to set up icebreakers beforehand. They said to consider organizing a virtual date that’s based on an activity. Some examples they gave included cooking the same dinner recipe while you chat, or maybe doing a paint-and-sip activity virtually.

You can have a picnic almost anywhere as long as there’s a place to drop a picnic blanket or a table for eating.
