What In The World Is The Viral ‘Oatzempic’ Weight Loss Trend?
There are so many diet trends to keep up with from Keto, and Whole30, to intermittent fasting and the Mediterranean diet. And the latest viral trend is “Oatzempic.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly one-half of U.S. adults try to lose weight throughout the year. Some people will take on small lifestyle changes like improving their diets. Others may attempt fad diets or viral trends that are designed to “help you lose weight fast.”
What in the world is oatzempic?
The new weight loss trend oatzempic has gained popularity on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. The program claims that supplementing a low-calorie diet with a blended oat, water, and lime mixture daily can help you shed pounds.
While the weight loss trends share a similar name to Ozempic, they are not the same. The New York Times reported that Ozempic is a drug used to treat diabetes. In 2017, it was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in adults with type 2 diabetes. It’s a weekly injection that helps lower blood sugar by helping the pancreas make more insulin.
For years, the drug has been gaining attention as celebrities and influencers have admitted to taking it to lose weight in short time frames. PEOPLE reported that stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Keke Palmer, Amy Schumer, Tracy Morgan, Kelly Osborne, Sharon Osbourne, and others have spoken about or used drugs like Ozempic and similar drugs.
Although oatzempic is clever name it’s important to note that oatzempic is a blended oat beverage. Ozempic is a drug only available by prescription provided by a licensed physician.
What’s in it?
According to several videos on social media, all you have to do is blend ½ cup oats, 1 cup water, and ½ lime juice. Some people added a ground cinnamon topping for a bit of flavor. Apparently, you drink the oat beverage 2 times a day.
What we know
A similar trend hit the social media scene in 2022. Then, it was called the “Oatmeal Lime Apple Shake.” It had the same claim as oatzempic, which was that it can help you to lose weight. The only difference is that this particular drink included an apple. Someone shared their take on this drink at the time saying “It’s rich in ‘fiber’ and water which may help you feel fuller for longer to make it easier to maintain a calorie deficit. But at the end of the day, drinking the shake before a meal or before bed will not automatically result in weight loss any more so than any other high-fiber lower calorie food.”
Currently, no clinical studies can speak on the effectiveness of consuming this beverage. But there are many videos of people testing it out for themselves that can help you decide on partaking or not. But at the end of the day, it’s best to consult concerns or questions about your diet with your doctor.
