According to statistics from the American Red Cross, just here in the United States, approximately 2 million U.S. citizens could be diagnosed with cancer this year. Many of those diagnosed will receive chemotherapy as part of their treatment. Often in addition to chemo, patients will also need to receive blood.
In fact, every day, the American Red Cross needs over 6,000 units of blood and approximately 5,000 units of platelets. Also, a patient will need a unit of blood or platelets every 2 seconds here in the U.S.
Did you know that there are eight different blood types? Of the blood types, those with an O negative blood type are referred to as a Universal donor. Those with Type O blood can be used in transfusions for any blood type.
If you need more information on this blood drive or future events, call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-910-733-2767).

The American Red Cross has an amazing entry into the history of the United States. One very special lady, Clara Barton founded the Red Cross in 1881. When you think about it, that is nearly 143 years of serving people in need. To learn more about the history of the American Red Cross, click here.
