Move Over Carolina Reaper, Pepper X is Now The World’s Hottest Pepper
After years on the throne of throat-scorching spice, the infamous Carolina Reaper is no longer the world’s hottest chili pepper: That title now belongs to the all-new Pepper X!
The newly-crowned world’s hottest pepper was concocted by “Smokin'” Ed Currie, founder of Puckerbutt Pepper Company. Don’t let the admittedly hilarious company name fool you; Ed takes his pepper-growing craft extremely seriously. When debuting Pepper X via the popular YouTube channel First We Feast, Ed details his scientific process for cultivating a flavorful pepper that packs a ton of spice.
“When we bred this pepper out, the first thing we looked for is something to raise that heat level…and the second thing was the flavor.”
As you can see from the pained, sweat-glazed facial expression of Hot Ones host Sean Evans, Pepper X is the real deal. The science backs it up too! Pepper X officially clocks in at 2,693,000 SHU on the Scoville Scale. For reference, the average jalapeño is anywhere between 2,500-8,000 SHU, while the significantly spicier habanero pepper (the hottest pepper I can personally stomach) maxes out at 350,000 HSU.
Pepper X’s Scoville score also blows past that of the Carolina Reaper (1.64 million), earning it the top spot in the Guinness World Records as the world’s hottest pepper. This ends the Reaper’s legendary 10-year hot streak at the top of the chili pepper food chain. Coincidentally (actually not, that was the plan), that’s how long Currie has been working on cultivating Pepper X. It’s not a quick process.
Smokin’ Ed is the creator of both the Carolina Reaper and Pepper X, so this has got to feel like a proud dad moment for him. It’s clear he loves to push the limits of how much heat the human body is capable of withstanding. Time will tell if another ten years down the road he creates an even hotter chili pepper that will wreak intestinal apocalypse on a whole new generation of spice-lovers!
