New Crown Event Center in Fayetteville Gets Change To Building Look and Setup
The new Crown Event Center scheduled to be built in Downtown Fayetteville is starting to come together visually, as a key committee has approved a new schematic design.
The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners Crown Event Center Committee voted last week to send a new, revised approach for the facade of the building, to the full Board of Commissioners for a vote.
The building is set to be built on Gillespie Street, in the space currently serving as a parking lot for the Cumberland County Courthouse. It is designed to replace the Crown Theater and the Crown Arena, which are set to close in October of 2025. (Note: The Crown Coliseum is NOT set to close. Just the Theater and Arena facilities.)
The new design moves the footprint of the building back off of Gillespie Street slightly, to allow for more pedestrian access at the front of the building. And it adds a new wood-look column setup on the glass facade. Bill Koonz, Regional Director for architect EwingCole, shared the updates.
“It’s impressive,” said Commissioner Jimmy Keefe. “This is a big day for Cumberland County.”
The release also said there is a cost increase associated with some of the changes, but they are still within the approved budget.
“Additionally, Koonz shared a proposed adjustment to the facility’s service yard, which would enclose the service yard; accommodate more large trucks for events and performances; provide capacity for back-of-house spaces to be located on the first floor; and allow the building footprint to be moved off Gillespie Street to give more room for pedestrian traffic and queueing before events,” the release said. “Although there are additional costs to the changes, Koonz noted the project is still within the Board of Commissioners’ approved budget.”
The full Board of Commissioners is set to vote on the Crown Event Center project on Tuesday night at its regularly-scheduled meeting in Fayetteville.
