‘Game Of Thrones’ Alumni Pilou Asbaek In Talks To Join ‘Aquaman 2’ Cast
Production for the highly-anticipated Aquaman sequel is gearing up, and the production companies behind the DC movie, along with director James Wan may have found Jason Momoa’s first new co-star, Deadline reports.
It’s none other than fellow Game of Thrones alum, Pilou Asbaek, best known for his villainous role as Euron Greyjoy on the HBO epic. Asbaek is in talks to join Aquaman 2 opposite Momoa, who is set to reprise his role as Aquaman. Amber Heard is also set to reprise her role as Mera, although there has been a petition circulating calling to remove her from the sequel. Patrick Wilson returns to his role as Orm Marius.
Not much is known about the plot, or about who Asbaek is playing. The film has a release date set for December 16, 2022.
The original film was a massive hit, grossing more than $1.14 billion at the worldwide box office, so naturally the sequel has been a high priority for Warner Bros. Aquaman became the highest-grossing DC film of all-time for Warner Bros., surpassing 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08B).
Besides GOT, Asbaek’s credits include horror/action film Overlord, horror/thriller Run Sweetheart Run and most recently, Netflix’s sci-fi action movie Outside the Wire. He can next be seen is an upcoming superhero thriller film opposite Sylvester Stallone called Samaritan.
Wan said at the DC Fandome virtual panel last August that he thinks the forthcoming Aquaman will be “a little bit more serious, a little bit more relevant in the world we are living in today. I think that’s where it wants to go.” Wan still wants to further develop the stories of Aquaman‘s characters, but yearns to do something fresh and exciting with the second installment.
Wilson told Wan he’d like to see new worlds for Aquaman 2, commenting on the panel, “I know [Wan] loves world-building and I’d like to see some of that. I know you’re going to push that ocean. There’s a lot of unexplored ocean!”
Wan guaranteed there will be new worlds and that Wilson is “going to be very excited as an actor.”
