‘Nomadland’ Dominated The BAFTA Awards, Took Home Four Big Wins
Nomadland triumphed as the biggest winner of the 2021 BAFTA film awards this weekend. Chloe Zhao’s critically-acclaimed exploration of the nomad community took home the Best Film award, Best Leading Actress for Frances McDormand, Best Director for Zhao and Best Cinematography for Joshua James Richards. In the film, McDormand portrays a middle-aged woman who travels the American West while living out of her van and picking up short-term work.
In celebrating her win, Zhao said she would be “very hungover” on Monday morning, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She added: “It’s never too early to be drunk in California.” Zhao became the first woman of color and the second woman in the award’s history to win the director award. The previous female directing winner was Kathryn Bigelow in 2010 for The Hurt Locker.
According to CBS News, Zhao, who lived among real American travelers for the film, dedicated the win to “the nomadic community who so generously welcomed us into their lives. They shared with us their dreams, their struggles, and their deep sense of dignity. Thank you for showing us that aging is a beautiful part of life. A journey we should all cherish and celebrate.”
39-year-old Zhao added, “How we treat our elders says a lot about who we are as a society, and we need to do better.”
When asked about what her directing prize meant for Asian women in film, Zhao said, “If this means more people like me get to live their dreams, then I feel very grateful.”
Prince William had been due to attend and make a speech in his role as president of Britain’s film academy, but was absent following the death of his grandfather. The ceremony opened with a tribute to Prince Philip, who was the academy’s first president in 1959. Presenters included Hugh Grant, Tom Hiddleston, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, but recipients accepted their awards remotely.
