Instagram Is Developing A Separate Instagram For Children Under 13
Facebook is developing a version of the Instagram app for children ages 13 and under.
Per Buzzfeed News, an internal announcement from Instagram’s Vice President of product states, “I’m excited to announce that going forward, we have identified youth work as a priority for Instagram and have added it to our H1 priority list. We will be building a new youth pillar within the Community Product Group to focus on two things: (a) accelerating our integrity and privacy work to ensure the safest possible experience for teens and (b) building a version of Instagram that allows people under the age of 13 to safely use Instagram for the first time.”
After news of the company’s new idea went public, Adam Mosseri, Head Of Instagram, tweeted out, “Kids are increasingly asking their parents if they can join apps that help them keep up with their friends. A version of Instagram where parents have control, like we did w/ Messenger Kids, is something we’re exploring. We’ll share more down the road.”
He added, “I think one of the main concerns from the folks we spoke with is that Instagram doesn’t yet have a complete handle on the bullying, harassment, etc on its main platform. Given that, those people have concerns about what a whole new platform for even younger users would entail.”

In a blog post, Instagram spoke more about this decision. They wrote, “We’re exploring bringing a parent-controlled experience to Instagram to help kids keep up with their friends, discover new hobbies and interests, and more. Protecting young people on Instagram is important to us. We want parents to have the information to help their teens have a safe and positive experience on Instagram.”
There is no word yet on when this feature will be available.
