Serena Williams Breaks Down After Defeat Against Naomi Osaka
Serena Williams fought back tears during her post-match press conference, after suffering a defeat in the semi-finals against Naomi Osaka in the Australian Open yesterday. Williams said, “Honestly, it was opportunities where I could have won. I could have been up 5-0. It was a big error day for me,” according to Yahoo News. Reporters asked what caused the errors, as Williams, with tears in her eyes says, “I don’t know. I’m done,” cutting the press conference short.

Williams had a 2-0 lead in her match against Osaka, until she took over in winning the next five games. After the match, Williams took a moment to acknowledge the crowd who was standing and applauding in respect for the 39-year-old tennis superstar. She raised her arm to wave back to the crowd, then placing her hand on her heart, according to ESPN. This gesture sparked questions on whether Williams was saying farewell to professional tennis. Williams said, “I don’t know. If I ever say farewell, I wouldn’t tell anyone.” When asked about it afterwards, she suggested it was an acknowledgment to the crowd.
