Apple’s Recycling Partner Was Caught Reselling Over 100,000 Devices
Apple is making some serious claims against their former business partner, GEEP Canada.
According to the New York Post, the company was hired to recycle devices but sold them instead. “The iPhone maker is demanding at least $22 million from GEEP Canada, which it says stole and resold 103,845 iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches that it had been hired to strip for parts.”
Between 2015 and 2017, Apple sent GEEP over half a million devices, and during a routine audit, they realized that 20 percent of them were still online.
GEEP claims this was done without knowledge by employees who have since been fired. Apple responded to the claim, saying the company’s officers and directors knew about the scheme.
GEEP was hired to take apart phones and products and collect any reusable precious metals. For example, they recycle cobalt, a central component in the batteries the company’s electronics use.
In a statement, Apple said, “Products sent for recycling are no longer adequate to sell to consumers and if they are rebuilt with counterfeit parts they could cause serious safety issues, including electrical or battery defects.”
