The US Bought Nearly All Global Stock Of Coronavirus Drug Remdesivir
The US purchased almost the entire global supply of an anti-viral drug remdesivir. Per the New York Post, remdesivir can speed the recovery of patients with COVID-19.
Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement that the US bought more than 500,000 treatment courses of the drug.
In a statement, he says, “President Trump has struck an amazing deal to ensure Americans have access to the first authorized therapeutic for COVID-19.”
They add, “To the extent possible, we want to ensure that any American patient who needs remdesivir can get it. The Trump Administration is doing everything in our power to learn more about life-saving therapeutics for COVID-19 and secure access to these options for the American people.”
As reported, remdesivir comes at a hefty price tag. Each dose runs about $520, so the typical patient with private health insurance will pay $3,120 to $5,720 for a full treatment.
