Cumberland County High School Seniors Are Eligible to Graduate, School System Says
High school seniors in Cumberland County now have a little more clarity on how the rest of their school year will go, as Cumberland County Schools issued guidance Thursday. However a decision on graduation ceremonies has not been made yet.
In an e-mail to parents and students, Cumberland County Schools said students in the Class of 2020 “will be eligible to graduation from high school on their originally scheduled graduation date” if they have met or exceeded the current credit requirements. However, no valedictorian or salutatorian honors will be given this year. Additionally, no report cards will be sent out for Quarter 6.
For courses the students are currently enrolled in for Spring 2020, grades of Pass “PC19” or Withdrawal “WC19” will be given, based on their standing on March 13. Those grades will not impact overall GPAs, however.
If students are not currently passing a course, CCS said they are eligible to continue working to improve those grades to get to a pass level. If they are unable to, the grade will remain a “WC19” on their transcript.
Even though Valedictorian and Salutatorian honors will not be given, students will still earn senior honors in the Latin Honor System, with Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude designations available.
And as for the big question for most students, should they continue doing their class work, the school system said, “We encourage students to continue completing assignments from their teachers. Although teachers are facilitating courses remotely, the content is still important and will help students prepare for their post-secondary aspirations.”
After receiving guidance from the State Board of Education and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, CCS has developed grading guidelines for high school seniors. To learn more, visit https://t.co/IrA1kAlRxs. pic.twitter.com/iYrpr06Otn
