‘Avengers: Endgame’ Breaks Records With $1.2 Billion Global Debut
No spoilers here: Avengers: Endgame smashed its way into cinematic history over the weekend.
According to a Marvel Studios press release, the latest Avengers film grossed an estimated $1.2 billion dollars in its opening weekend, making $350 million domestically and $859 million internationally.
Avengers: Endgame was a sort of culmination of the Avengers series of movies — which, included storylines from the Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America and Thor franchises — as well as Marvel’s other film franchises (Guardians of the Galaxy, Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Spider-Man and Captain Marvel). But as Alan Horn, the chairman of Walt Disney Studios (which owns Marvel) said in a press release, “Though Endgame is far from an end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these first 22 films constitute a sprawling achievement, and this weekend’s monumental success is a testament to the world they’ve envisioned, the talent involved, and their collective passion, matched by the irrepressible enthusiasm of fans around the world.”
So, what’s next? As of now, the only other Marvel Cinematic Universe film scheduled is Spider-Man: Far From Home, which opens July 5, and will also feature MCU characters Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson), former SHIELD Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau). But with Disney’s recent acquisition of Fox Films, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and Deadpool now return to Marvel, so expect even more characters to be introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the next few years. (The next X-Men film, Dark Phoenix, which opens June 7, is expected to be the last film in that franchise before it will be rebooted as part of the MCU).
