Eminem’s Oscar Performance: Watch It Again
Eminem’s Oscar performance on Sunday night (February 9) was one of the night’s biggest surprises. He recently told Variety why he decided to perform “Lose Yourself,” nearly twenty years after the 8 Mile song was nominated for an Oscar — and it won, although Eminem decided not to attend the ceremony.
“I kinda figured maybe since I didn’t get a chance to do it at the time, maybe it would be cool. Back then, I never even thought that I had a chance to win, and we had just performed ‘Lose Yourself’ on the Grammys with the Roots a couple of weeks before the Oscars, so we didn’t think it was a good idea. And also, back at that time, the younger me didn’t really feel like a show like that would understand me.”
He noted that he was home with his daughter that night: “At that point in time Hailie had to be at school early in the morning,” so he was already sleeping when the award was announced. His keyboardist/producer Luis Resto accepted the award, and then called Eminem and woke him up to tell him.
