Lizzo Shares How ‘Truth Hurts’ Was Before Its Time
In the latest issue of Rolling Stone, cover girl Lizzo opens but about her path to stardom and the incredible mainstream success she’s had. She also shares how she had an emotional breakdown in 2018 while touring, which caused her to begin therapy. She says, “That was really scary. But being vulnerable with someone I didn’t know, then learning how to be vulnerable with people that I do know, gave me the courage to be vulnerable as a vocalist.”
Lizzo also shares that “Truth Hurts” came to be at a time when she and her label were looking for an impactful hit. “It was the first song that was like, ‘Oh, this is a cool song.’ Most of my rap songs were so lyrical spherical, you know? [On ‘Truth Hurts’] I’m doing that rap-singing thing and the beat was lit. I was proud of it. I could play it for my friends back home in Houston.”
She also says that she went to a psychic soon after the song was written, and she had an interesting moment when the psychic began quoting lines from the song. “I was like, ‘What the hell?’ And she was like, ‘You should just get married to yourself.'” Lizzo goes on to do that in the music video.
Lizzo lastly talks about how the TV show Someone Great put “Truth Hurts” on the map, and how the song taking years to take off was for a reason. “When we were making it we knew it was ahead of its time. Now we have the proof that these songs are timeless. They will connect when they need to connect.”
Lizzo will perform at the GRAMMYs this Sunday (January 26).
