Taylor Swift Stands Up For LGBTQ Rights At The MTV VMAs
When Taylor Swift won the coveted Video Of The Year at the 2019 MTV VMAs for “You Need To Calm Down,” she used her time to thank the fans who voted for her. Specifically, she thanked them for getting down with the message of the Lover video before calling out the White House.
“Several points were made,” Swift said, and noted that the fact that fans voted for the video meant that they agreed with one very important point in the video. That would be that we should “all be treated equally under the law,” she said.
The video for “You Need To Calm Down” ends with Swift asking fans to sign her petition for the Equality Act, which would create federal protections for LGBTQ Americans. “It now has half a million signatures,” Swift said, “which is five times the amount that it would need to warrant a response from the White House.”
Swift then looked at her wrist, a sign that the clock is ticking for the president to do the right thing.
