Speak Now, Taylor’s Version is finally here and there is merch to be had!
Taylor Swift is re-recording all of the albums she released under her previous record label “Big Machine” after it was taken over by music executive Scooter Braun (Kanye West’s former manager). Here’s why that was a problem for Taylor. In the fall of 2018, Taylor and Big Machine parted ways amicably and Taylor signed with Republic, a division of Universal Music Group. By taking over Big Machine, Scooter Braun now owns the rights to all of the masters of music made by Taylor when she was with that label. That means Braun not only makes money every time one of the songs from those albums is played or featured, but he has the right to do with those songs what he will and Taylor has no control.
Taylor’s point of view is this: if she created the music, she should get to keep the rights. Makes sense, but that’s not how the business works. So in an effort to reclaim what’s hers, Taylor has had to re-record every song from every album and re-release them into the universe with the hopes that fans will now only listen to “Taylor’s Versions” instead of the originals.
That effort takes time, so now we’re up to the re-release of Speak Now, this time “Taylor’s Version” and her fans are ready for it. If you’re one of them, let’s celebrate by investing in some really cool items that commemorate the album as well as individual songs.
