Anne Hathaway Is 5 Years Sober
Anne Hathaway shares that she is 5 years sober in a new interview. The Idea of You star told the New York Times on Saturday (April 27), that she doesn’t “normally talk about it,” but is proud to reach this milestone.
The award-winning actress, 41, quit drinking alcohol because she knew “deep down it wasn’t for me.” As we reported in March, the mother of two admitted it felt “so extreme” to say “but none” when it comes to abstaining from alcohol completely.
She stopped fighting it because she alluded to being allergic and having an anaphylactic reaction to drinking alcohol. While Hathaway understands that everyone has their own relationship with drinking, she feels positive about quitting her “wallowing fuel.”

In 2019, the Devil Wears Prada alum found that alcohol was affecting her ability to raise her son, Jonathan. While appearing on Ellen, she told the host that she didn’t want to risk having a hangover when he was at an age where he really depended on her being present and quit drinking then.
Hathaway stars in the rom-com The Idea of You opposite Nicholas Galitzine. Based on the acclaimed, contemporary love story of the same name, the film centers on Solène (Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom who begins an unexpected romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Galitzine), the lead singer of August Moon, the hottest boy band on the planet. The film streams on Amazon Prime this Thursday, May 2nd. Watch the trailer below:
Hathaway, who stars and produces the upcoming rom-com, knew she was going to cast Galitzine as the love interest from early on. She recalled her fellow producers had met a number of young men already, but when Nick walked in, she found herself laughing because he was “so ridiculously perfect for the part. I just thought: he is it. Is he gonna be able to read the lines? Read the lines; great. Okay, can you sing? Oh, my God, he can sing. Wait, and he can play the guitar? Okay, and he’s just fun to be around. He’s just charming. Like, he’s just charmed this entire room.”
Galitzine took part in a non-sexual chemistry test for the 2023 rom-com Red, White & Royal Blue. In it, he plays Prince Henry, a member of the British monarchy who begins a relationship with the son of the first female President of the United States. Director Matthew Lopez described the Zoom chemistry read as “quite literal chemistry. I think you could feel the atoms swirling between them,” even though Galitzine and co-star Taylor Zakhar Perez were on opposite sides of the ocean.
Next up, Hathaway and Jessica Chastain will star in the psychological thriller Mothers’ Instinct as women whose relationship fractures after the young son of Hathaway’s character dies in a freak accident. Then, Hathaway and Salma Hayek will produce and star in an action buddy comedy called Seesaw Monster, Netflix’s adaptation of the novel by Japanese author Kotaro Isaka, who also wrote Bullet Train.
