Pedro Pascal: ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Saved Him From Homelessness

Pedro Pascal may be a household name now after his popular roles in Game of Thrones, Narcos, The Mandalorian, and The Last of Us, but there was a time when the actor really struggled to survive. In a recent interview with ET, Pascal reflected on how the “community has sustained my life as a professional.”
Adding that he was “entry-level” for about 15 years, the Fantastic Four star’s early roles include one-off appearances on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, NYPD Blue, Without a Trace, and Law & Order. It is his season four premiere episode role in Buffy that saved Pascal from being homeless.
While listing other events in his life that he’d struggled with financially during that time, Pascal’s residual check was once the only reason he was able to pay his rent and not quit acting. “We’re talking about being able to see a doctor, getting sick, getting a surgery, paying my rent when I had less than $7 in my account.” The Buffy residual is what “showed up and saved the day” and is the only reason Pascal was able to continue pursuing his acting career.

The actor appeared in the 1999 episode, credited as Pedro Balmaceda at the time, before changing it to his mother Verónica’s last name, Pascal, following her suicide a year later. In his Buffy appearance, Pedro’s character Eddie is a handsome college student who bumps into Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy as she begins her freshman year at college. She helps Eddie find his way around campus as they flirt. He talks about the psychology professor he shares with Buffy.
Reflecting on his Buffy appearances last year after Gellar posted a throwback photo of the two and captioned it: “When #Mother met #Father,” Pedro told ET during The Mandalorian season 3 premiere that he remembers “absolutely everything” with a smile. He recalled Gellar sharing ice cream with him, how kind she was, and how she taught him to use a sandbag to hit his mark.
Pascal’s past financial struggles have been publicly discussed before, previously by his close friend Sarah Paulson. The American Horror Story star told Esquire last year that she would give Pascal her per diem (by-the-day allowance) from a job she was working on “so that he could have money to feed himself.” Now, according to Celebrity Net Worth, Pascal is worth $10 million.
