Ryan Reynolds Tells Blake Lively He ‘Slipped Into Someone’s DMs Again’
Ryan Reynolds isn’t shy to slip into someone’s DMs if it means he’s gaining a friendship out of it.
Filling in on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday night (August 9), It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney took over as host and introduced Reynolds by saying, “A couple of years ago having never met in person, our first guest tonight decided to buy a smalltown Welsh football team together and now we’re business partners, friends, and yes, sometimes lovers.”
The first thing Reynolds said to McElhenney as he sat down was, “Wow! It’s so nice to be here,” changing his tone deeper, “You’re really good at this.”
When asked how the two met, the Free Guy star said, “Well, I kind of slid into your DMs. I saw Rob in one of the episodes of It’s Always Sunny. He did something that was absolutely spectacular. It was one of the most beautiful things that I’ve ever seen — it was a dance sequence all in black and white in the rain. That was probably the pound for pound the most gorgeous, beautifully shot, choreographed and performed three minutes I think I’ve ever seen on television.”
Reynolds noted that as he has gotten older, he needs to tell people that he appreciates them more, so he had to DM the It’s Always Sunny star about the spectacular performance that moved him so.
McElhenney questioned Reynolds on how many people’s DMs he slides into on a daily basis, to which the Deadpool actor said it was not very often although their exchange changed his life. The two would eventually buy the Wrexham professional football club — a decision that Reynolds didn’t reveal to his wife Blake Lively until after the deal was made.
“After you reached out about this absolutely insane idea,” Ryan recalled. “I remember seeing Blake and saying, ‘I have bad news and I have really bad news. The bad news is, I slipped into someone’s DMs again! The really bad news is that I might’ve bought half of a fifth-tier national football league in Wales.'”
As far as Blake’s reaction to such a big move, Ryan jokingly admitted it was “not good, Rob. Not great, we’re still working through that one.”
Ryan and Rob made their big purchase before they met in person — with the duo capturing their first meeting in their upcoming documentary, Welcome to Wrexham.
