Watch: The Weeknd’s Trippy Trailer For ‘The Idol’ HBO Show
The trailer for The Weeknd’s The Idol was released over the weekend. The Canadian crooner’s acting, writing and producing debut in the drama series, by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, will hit HBO Max sometime this year.
The Idol will tell the story of a troubled female pop singer, Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), who starts a romance with an enigmatic L.A. club owner who is the leader of a secret cult (Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd). This will mark The Weeknd’s first major acting role, following a cameo appearance as a version of himself in 2019’s Uncut Gems as well as writing and starring in an episode of animated series American Dad on TBS in 2020.
HBO has yet to confirm a release date for the series, but promised it’s “coming soon.” The rest of The Idol‘s cast of actors/musicians include Troye Sivan, Debby Ryan, BLACKPINK’s Jennie Kim, Rachel Sennott and Hari Nef. The show will also feature Elizabeth Berkley, Tyson Ritter, Anne Heche, Melanie Liburd, Nico Hiraga and Maya Eshet.
The trailer focuses on the wild relationship between The Weeknd’s mysterious character and Lily-Rose Depp’s ambitious pop star Jocelyn, describing their connection as “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood.”
