Wanda Sykes Says Chris Rock Apologized To Her At Oscars Afterparty
Wanda Sykes co-hosted the Oscars on Sunday (March 27) alongside comedians Regina Hall and Amy Schumer. Sykes, who is a longtime friend of Chris Rock, says the fellow comedian apologized to Sykes for robbing the spotlight of her big night.
On Wednesday (March 30), Sykes was a guest on The Ellen Degeneres Show where she opened up about how Rock apologized to her at an afterparty hours after Will Smith slapped him for telling a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
“I hope he doesn’t mind me saying this, but I saw Chris at [Guy Oseary’s afterparty] and as soon as I walked up to him, the first thing he said is, ‘I’m so sorry,’” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Why are you apologizing?’ He was like, ‘It was supposed to be your night. You and Amy and Regina were doing such a great job. I’m so sorry this is now gonna be about this.’”
Sykes added, “Because that’s who Chris is.”
In the process of telling the apology story, Sykes also slammed Smith for his actions: “It was sickening. It was absolutely— I physically felt ill, and I’m still a little traumatized by it,” Sykes said. “And for them to let [Will] stay in that room and enjoy the rest of the show and accept his award, I was like, ‘How gross is this?’ This sends the wrong message. If you assault somebody, you get escorted out the building and that’s it. But for them to let him continue, I thought it was gross.”
According to the Academy, they asked the King Richard actor to leave after slapping Chris Rock and he allegedly refused to do so.
