Ed Sheeran Wants To Build A Crypt At His Suffolk Estate
Ed Sheeran is getting medieval with it, submitting a request to build a crypt underneath the chapel on his estate in Suffolk, England.
Per The Independent, the 30-year-old singer-songwriter plans to build the crypt under the floor of a boat-shaped chapel. In 2019, the “Bad Habits” singer received approval to build a “private place of retreat for contemplation and prayer” on his East Anglian estate which has been dubbed “Sheeranville.”
According to the design statement submitted by architects at the time, Sheeran wants to use the chapel for key life and family milestones, marriages, christenings and social gatherings, hoping it will provide a peaceful place for guests. The application, which was submitted last month and is still pending decision, states that the addition of the crypt would be approximately 6 by 9 feet (1.8 meters by 2.7 meters). On the ground floor of the chapel reads: “burial zone beneath (penetration through slab).”
Per the publication, Sheeran said last month that he hopes to buy vast areas of land in the country, as his mission to “rewild” as much of the U.K. as he can. Besides turning his own estate into a “wildlife meadow,” the singer’s goal is to plant more trees in an effort to make up for the carbon footprint caused by his career. “I love my county and I love wildlife and the environment.”
“I have got a massive beehive. I have this massive wildlife pond with newts in it, salamanders and there’s a grass snake that lives in there and hedgehogs,” Sheeran said. “The thing with sustainability and being a public figure is when people support it, suddenly people try and find things to call them out on.”
