Avril Lavigne’s TikTok Debut Features Real-Life ‘Sk8er Boi’ Tony Hawk
Avril Lavigne brought us back to the year 2002 via her TikTok debut, joining forces with a legendary “Sk8er Boi” to make a huge stamp on the site.
In a video posted to her account yesterday (June 21), the Canadian songstress lip-syncs along from her debut album Let Go. Set against a sunny beach backdrop, the 36-year-old hasn’t aged a day, wearing black shorts and muscle tee, complete with a red and blue striped tie.
As the song gets to the chorus, “He was a skater boy/She said, ‘See ya later, boy,'” the camera zooms in to Lavigne, then out to reveal smiling professional skateboarder Tony Hawk — now wearing the tie — as he skates down a green half pipe.
One TikToker commented on the post, “So… we all just non-aging vampires now?!”
Steve Aoki wrote, “Everything about this video is perfect.”
One person jokingly said, “Woah, who is that guy, he’s really good.”
Hawk, now 53, is the epitome of skater boy, having taken up the sport when he was 9 years old after his brother gave him his first board — and turning pro just five years later. Per CNN, Hawk dominated skateboarding competitions in the ’80s and ’90s, named top vert (short for vertical) skater every year from 1984 to 1996. He won 73 titles and has invented dozens of skateboarding moves.
Lavigne’s TikTok video was timed to coincide with Go Skateboarding Day, an annual celebration of the sport which first began in California in 2004 which also coincides with the first day of summer.
Hawk also posted a short clip to his Instagram page of Lavigne skating, captioning, “Sk8er Boi singer learns skating move from old Sk8er Man.” In the video, Lavigne nervously goes down the ramp resulting in her wiping out. She gets up one more go in the video, able to drop in on the ramp. Lavigne commented on the post, “Thanks for teaching me to drop in Sk8er Man 🤘🏻🛹🔥 legend.”
Last month, Lavigne posted a video on Instagram of herself falling off a skateboard again, captioning, “Hope this makes you laugh as hard as it’s made my friends and I laugh all week. That’s what I get for sk8ing in my slippers and dress. 🙄🛹”
