‘The Chapelle Show’ Is Being Pulled From HBO At Dave Chapelle’s Request
The Dave Chapelle Show will no longer be streaming on HBO in 2021. Per Yahoo, it was Dave’s decision to do this.
HBO and HBO Max chief content officer, made a statement about this decision. He said, “We had a conversation with Dave. I won’t get into it, but it’s very clear that it’s a very unique and specific and emotional issue he’s got. So at the end of the year, at the end of this year, December 31st, we’re going to honor his request and take the show down.”
Netflix also made the same decision and pulled the show from it’s platform. Yahoo states, “Chappelle urged his fans not to stream ‘Chappelle’s Show’ on various platforms because series owner ViacomCBS has not paid him for licensing out the Comedy Central hit.” Now, CBS All Access will be the only platform to have the series in its library.
In a video Dave posted on Instagram last month, he goes into detail on why he didn’t want Netflix to stream his show. He said, “People think I made a lot of money from ‘Chappelle’s Show.’ When I left that show, I never got paid. They didn’t have to pay me because I signed the contract. But is that right? I found out that these people were streaming my work, and they never had to ask me, or they never have to tell me. Perfectly legal because I signed the contract. But is that right? I didn’t think so either.”
Dave also spoke about how HBO Max was profiting off the show when they once rejected his pitch for the series. He said, “They said, literally, ‘What do we need you for?’ That’s what they told me as they kicked me out of the office, ‘What do we need you for?’ And here we are all these years later, and they’re streaming the very show I was pitching to them. So I’m asking them, what do you need me for?”
