Big Sean Says ‘IDFWU’ Wasn’t A Naya Rivera Diss
Big Sean recently spoke out stating that his single “IDFWU” wasn’t a Naya Rivera diss. The single which derives from the Detroit rapper’s 2015 album Dark Sky Paradise and features E-40 was interpreted as being about Sean’s ex-fiancĂ©e, who died tragically in July after going missing while swimming in a California lake.
During a new interview with New York magazine, Big Sean said, âIDFWUâ was not about the Glee star. âI donât feel comfortable talking about it because I want to respect her,â he said. âSheâs made such an impact on people, and sheâs done so many great things in her life and her career that it was hurtful to even have that [song] be associated with her.â
Sean shared that he played the track for Rivera, who gave it her approval. âIt wasnât a diss to her. I truly made the song and played it for her. She knew about it, and she liked it,â Sean said. âWe had a breakup that was very public, and we were young and we forgave each other and moved on from that.â
However, the rapper added, âIf I would have known something this tragic would have happened, I would have never made the song.â
Back in April 2013, the former-pair began dating after meeting via social media and collaborating on Riveraâs debut single âSorry.â Following Rivera’s death, the rapper penned a heartfelt tribute to his ex. Rivera was believed to have assisted her son to safety on their boat prior to drowning at Lake Piru in Ventura, California.
âThank you for blessing us all with your talent and presence. you are a hero!â Big Sean wrote. âNot just because of how you saved your son, also because of the barriers you knocked down for so many people to make them feel confident in themselves and to stand tall and be proud when they couldnât achieve that on their own. I appreciate and cherish everything that ever happened between us for making me wiser and a better person.â
