Fayetteville: A Good Source For Halloween Costumes
It’s Halloween week, and in a couple of days, the kids will be trick-or-treating, and everyone will be dressed up in their favorite Halloween costume. It’s getting close to the wire if you haven’t chosen your Halloween costume yet, but we found a great fallback in case the Halloween stores are packed with people.
Don’t forget about the Goodwill and thrift stores, as they are a great place to find costumes for Halloween for something unique and cheap. If you create your own costume, the Goodwill is really one of the best places to find your unique costume, not to mention, they have older costumes the people have donated through the years that you also pick through to find something a little older than maybe this year or last year.
History Of Halloween Costumes
An early reference to wearing costumes on Halloween comes from Scotland in 1585. There are many references to the custom during the 18th and 19th centuries in the Celtic countries of Scotland, Ireland, Mann, and Wales. It has been suggested that the custom comes from the Celtic festivals of Samhain and Calan Gaeaf, or from the practice of “souling” during the Christian observance of Allhallowtide.
In America
The custom of dressing in costumes at Halloween in North America was first recorded in 1911, when a newspaper in Kingston, Ontario, reported children going “guising” around the neighborhood. In 19th-century America, Halloween was often celebrated with costume parades and “licentious revelries.” However, efforts were made to “domesticate” the festival to conform with Victorian-era morality.
