Chappell Roan Publicly Calls Out Former Theater Teacher
It’s probably satisfying to call out those who doubted you, and many celebrities have used their platforms to do just that. For example, Lady Gaga once acknowledged a now-deleted Facebook group created by her classmates at New York University called “Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous.” More recently, Chappell Roan was filmed introducing her track “My Kink Is Karma” at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Zilker Park, taking aim at her former theater teacher.
She said, “I usually dedicate this song to my ex but I dedicate this song to my f—ing theater teacher… who kicked me out, b—-! I’m here!” A fan posted the video, writing, “f— the theater teacher that kicked out Chappell. We ride at dawn.”
Fans quickly took to social media to criticize the unnamed teacher, with one writing, “As someone who got bullied by his high school theater teacher, Chappell Roan calling out her theater teacher at ACL was healing for the soul.” Another added, “Chappell Roan’s teacher who kicked her out of theater club is never going to know peace ever again… and rightfully so!!”
Chappell Roan is known for her openness. She pulled out of the All Things Go festival last month, citing feeling overwhelmed. “I apologize to people who have been waiting to see me in NYC & DC this weekend at All Things Go, but I am unable to perform,” she wrote on her Instagram Story. “Things have gotten overwhelming over the past few weeks and I am really feeling it.”
Before that, she strongly defended her decision not to endorse any political candidates ahead of the 2024 election. In an interview with The Guardian, she expressed her frustration with the U.S. government, saying she has “so many issues” with it, adding, “There are so many things that I would want to change. So I don’t feel pressured to endorse someone.” She later clarified her remarks on TikTok.
Roan has also spoken out about the pressures of fame. In a Sept. 16 interview with The Face, she hinted that she “might quit” music if the demands of fame become too overwhelming. In a separate interview with Rolling Stone, she opened up about facing predatory behavior.
And, of course, there’s her viral moment with a VMA photographer. While posing for photos at UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y., a photographer impatiently yelled at the rising pop star to “Shut the f— up,” prompting Roan to fire back with an unfiltered response: “You shut the f— up.” Waving a finger at the heckler, she added, “Not me, b—-,” before calmly resuming her red carpet poses to cheers from the crowd.
