Viral Moment: Texas Man Smashes $4K Taylor Swift Guitar After Auction
A Texan man shelled out $4,000 for what was billed as an autographed Taylor Swift guitar, only to take a swing at it with a hammer. Footage from the Ellis County Wild Game Dinner in Waxahachie, Texas, has gone viral, capturing this unforgettable moment.
The event aimed to raise funds for agricultural education for local youth, featuring an auction that included not just the guitar, but also tickets to see George Strait and Chris Stapleton, an African safari, a dove hunt, and a trip along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
In the clip, the man strides up to the stage, where a member of the auction staff awaits with the guitar. Decked out with images from Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour and a hammer in hand. As he returns to his seat, proudly wielding the smashed instrument, the auctioneer chuckles and hands him a box, saying, “Now take that and hang up that busted thing.”
Speculation is swirling that the stunt might have political undertones, especially since Taylor Swift recently endorsed Kamala Harris for president.
One event-goer, Rob Bartley, shared with The Independent: “A Taylor Swift guitar had sold at another event unrelated to this earlier in the year, so it wasn’t an unheard-of item to auction. That said… when the man announced his intention to smash it, the camera phones came out.”
He added, “It was unexpected, but not surprising. This part of Texas leans heavily conservative, and the Biden/Harris administration isn’t held in high regard.”
TMZ reported that the guitar was donated to the auction before Swift made her Kamala Harris endorsement. A certificate of authenticity confirms that she did sign the instrument, which was given to the auction by a third party. While the donation wasn’t meant for destruction, the buyer paid for it and decided to smash it up himself.
The Ellis County Wild Game Dinner is a non-profit that supports agricultural education for local youth, ensuring the money went to a good cause.
The man’s actions have ignited a lively debate online, with some cheering him on while others argue he could’ve spent that cash in better ways. Though comments on the YouTube video of the smashing are turned off, reactions on TikTok remain live.
One user wrote, “What a waste of money,” while another chimed in, “She’ll live rent free in his head forever [laughing emoji]. Who’s the real winner?” One commenter stated, “I refuse to tell someone what to do and how to spend their money,” while another insisted, “He did the right thing.”
