Charli XCX’s Brat album was released this Friday (June 7), and is already highly rated by fans and critics alike.
Charli XCX’s Brat
The English singer-songwriter, 31, released her sixth studio album, becoming one of the most acclaimed albums of the year so far. Metacritic rated brat a 92 on their site, calling it a “genius” album for a multitude of reasons: it’s literary and musically complex yet effortless, and it is “perfectly suited for when you need to cry at the club.”
Reacting to Charli XCX’s brat and the high reviews, fans flocked to X (formerly Twitter) to share their excitement. One person wrote: “not her ending everyone’s favs like whoa ????” Another person stated: “Being the most acclaimed album of 2024 is a huge achievement. She always brings such unique and innovative music to the table.” A third fan commented: “Oh Charli, don’t make a smash hit critically acclaimed album like that!” Added another fan, “Oh mother she is taking it.” One more said, “GAGGGG HYPERPOP BEST GENRE EVER.”
As usual, fans couldn’t help but drag other popular artists like Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj into the conversation. One person snarkily shaded Taylor Swift and wrote: “taylor swift in 20 seconds: so i’ve been working on a secret project for the past 5 years…[white heart emoji].” Another said, “But barbz told me she fell off ? [laughing emoji].” A third stated: “nothing for cardi.”
Shading other popular artists doesn’t seem to be out of nowhere, as some people speculate brat shades Taylor Swift in the song “Sympathy is a Knife.” The lyrics seem to point to Swift’s brief romance with 1975 frontman Matty Healy. Charli sings, “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show. Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up.” The singer is engaged to the band’s drummer, George Daniel. She adds in the lyrics that she “couldn’t even be her if I tried.”
Charli XCX has also been mistaken for Lorde and has even sung about it in her new song, “Girl, So Confusing.” The song’s lyrics, “People say we’re alike. They say we’ve got the same hair,” describe how the two are constantly compared.
Though the song shows Charli’s mixed feelings about the New Zealand artist, Lorde shared her support of the brat album. Lorde shared a message of support to her fellow singer on her Instagram Story Thursday (June 6), writing, “I speak for all of us when I say it’s an honour to be moved, changed and gagged by her work, there is NO ONE like this bitch. Brava and welcome brat.”
