Dua Lipa Announces New Single ‘Houdini’

After announcing her new album is coming out in 2024, Dua Lipa is giving fans a taste of her new music coming next week. The 28-year-old singer officially announced that her single, “Houdini” releases on Thursday, November 9, at 6 pm ET. “Houdini” is Lipa's latest track, following her song “Dance the Night,” which was featured on the soundtrack for Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster Barbie. Her last album was 2020’s Future Nostalgia, which won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album in 2021.

Teasing the track on Tuesday (October 31), Lipa shared a snippet of the song. The pop star featured close-up snippets of her new red hair, placing her necklace with a lock pendant seductively in her mouth. She sings, "Tell me all the ways that you need me." At the very end, the numbers 4, 8, 9, 9, 14, 15, 21 appear. Fans on X, formerly Twitter, figured out that each number represented a letter in the alphabet, decoding to D, H, I, I, N, O, U. Unscrambled, this spells out "Houdini."

On the new album, Dua revealed that she’s developing a new sound inspired by “1970s-era psychedelia.” The artist will be working with a smaller group of songwriting collaborators. One of which is rumored to be Kevin Parker of the Australian psych-rock band Tame Impala. Though Lipa’s kept other details about her forthcoming album under wraps because it is still in development, she said the process is “insular and exciting.” She previously said she chooses to write music based on her own interests and obsessions rather than including too much of her personal life in her music. She said, “I think it’s a marketing tool: How confessional can you be? I also don’t put so much of my life out there for people to dig into the music in this weird, analytical way.” Despite that, Dua says the next album will be “more personal.”
